The dry winter had affected the wildflowers. The Joshua trees were blossoming, but finding flowers of other kinds required considerable effort. Unwilling to grant me instant gratification, the land taught me to recognize certain scents on the air, and to listen for the hum of bees that might signal a flowering plant somewhere nearby. And then, because even the tiniest flash of bright color felt like victory, I grew to relish the search. And as each of those elusive hues colored my thoughts, a new series was born.
